Dr. Sukanya Borsaikia

Dr Sukanya Borsaikia is engaged with NID MP as an Associate Senior Faculty in Industrial Design Discipline with an experience in research and Design spanning over 14 years with publications in numerous international conference proceedings and journals. She completed her BDes in Product Design from NID Ahmedabad, MDes in Product Design from Domus Academy and NABA, Milan, Italy (Scholarship holder) and PhD in Design from DoD, IIT Guwahati. As a founding member of NID MP she played a pivotal role in establishing the Institute and Industrial Design department (workshop, labs etc) as the foremost Discipline Lead(ID) along with framing the BDes curriculum of Industrial Design.

Previously, she spearheaded in establishing the Design Clinic Scheme Cell under Ministry of MSMEs, GOI in NE India and steered collaborative workshops as a Co-Coordinator and Design consultant along with imparting sustainable design knowledge and solutions to entrepreneurs, MSMEs and local craft artisans. She has also worked with IIT Guwahati for setting up the Design Innovation Centre (DIC) Lab with her Supervisor. Her experience in Industry is spread across companies like Hitachi Home and Life solutions, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Pininfarina(Italy), Interni(Italy) for Salone Del Mobile, Makio Hasuike(Italy).

With her experience and knowledge, she has been instrumental in imparting knowledge to various Design based courses and projects in both foundation and Industrial Design department along with guiding students for graduation project. Through her previous experience, her work profile and interest area under the domain of Industrial Design is spread across areas of Product Design, Universal Design, Design for children/elderly/specially abled, Sustainable Design, Packaging Design, Nature inspired design, Form and design, Solar Technology enabled design, Automata, Semantics, Cognition and Behaviour Craft and Culture, UI/UX Design, Tangible and Intangible Identity, Appliance Design, research in design, Furniture design, 2D and 3D drawing/sketching/digital drawings/rendering, Design with bamboo.

She perceives Design as an impetus to not only solve challenges but augment the senses to solve them with humility believing it to give a wide palate of choice for rational contemplation of ideas so that there is Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency along with Ethical Transformability for the betterment of consumer and society. She believes in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which inculcates an understanding that ‘Whole World is a Family’ and she as a design educator and creative thinker can impart and work for the incessant development of the world with simplicity and empathy.
